Trent Mitchell (b.1979) is a renowned Australian fine art photographer who delves into the timeless relationship between the human experience and the complexities of nature.
Trent explores the ways in which people are shaped and influenced by their environment, and how they, in turn, shape and impact the natural world. Mitchell's art and life are deeply intertwined with the sea, which has played a significant role in his upbringing, his way of life and creative expression. It was inevitable that the ocean would serve as a life long muse for his art, even when it's not the subject of his work its undeniable influence is layered in there somewhere.
Mitchell's immersive water photography is the most well-known aspect of his practice, yet his conceptual narrative approach explores the intersection of man and his environment in the broadest possible sense. His ability to not only compose his subject, but to distil the sensibility of the moment and truly give an intimate connection to place, identifies his art.
Trent works across both digital and film mediums, exploring both black and white and colour photography. His work has garnered international recognition, including winning the Moran Contemporary Photographic Prize in 2015, and being a finalist for the award multiple times. He has also been featured in prestigious exhibitions such as the International Photography Awards, Sony World Photography Awards, Head On, and Australian Life Photographic Prize. Furthermore, his work has been acquired for numerous public and private collections, including the National Library of Australia.
